3 Simple Passing and Possession Based Games

The below are 3 simple passing and possession based games from Playerdevelopmentproject.com

Each session can be adapted to age or ability to suit different players or achieve different outcomes.

1) A simple rondo but with alternating sizes and/or touches.

Using the below allows a larger number of players to be active and also presents them with new challenges based on which square they work in.

Progression & coaching points:

  • Limit/increase the amount of touches in each box - this will require the players to be mindful of how they pass to their teammates

  • The size of the box will determine how much off ball movement can be done to create angles

2) Players around the outside work between cones. The central player moves across both boxes to work defenders. If the defenders win the ball, they have 3 seconds to score in either of the little goals.

Progression & coaching points:

  • Create and exploit space by trying to move the defenders with either movements or passing.

  • How does changing the tempo affect the defenders? When to play quick or slow?

  • Creating space and playing angles

3) This last drill is a 6 v 2 inside a 4x4 grid.

Once you have played a pass, must move into a different box. Every grid must have a player inside for the game to carry on.

The defenders try to win the ball back and score.

Progression & coaching points:

  • Scanning both on and off the ball. To ensure each grid has a player inside and also

  • Scanning whilst moving to look at which square is the best to run into.

  • Defenders looking to set traps in order to win the ball back and work as a pair

  • Give the teams a chance to chat about tactics
